What to consider when deciding between Insulated Metal Panels and Batt Insulation

Updated: Apr 13, 2023

Insulated metal panels and batt insulation are two of the most common insulation solutions used in pre-engineered steel buildings. Both provide excellent energy efficiency and have unique benefits and drawbacks, making them ideal for different applications.

Insulated metal panels are made from two sheets of steel, with a layer of foam insulation in between them. This type of insulation provides superior thermal performance, as well as superior air tightness. It is also lightweight, durable, and easy to install. However, insulated metal panels are more expensive than batt insulation, and may not be suitable for all applications.

Batt insulation is a traditional type of insulation made from fiberglass, rock wool, or cellulose. It is installed in walls and ceilings to prevent air infiltration and increase thermal efficiency. Batt insulation is usually cheaper than insulated metal panels, and it is also easier to install in tight spaces. However, it is not as air-tight, and it may not provide the same level of thermal efficiency as insulated metal panels.

When deciding between insulated metal panels and batt insulation for pre-engineered steel buildings, it is important to consider the specific requirements of the building. Insulated metal panels are ideal for applications that require superior thermal efficiency and air tightness, while batt insulation is better suited for tight spaces and applications that require a lower cost. Both solutions offer excellent benefits, so it is important to consider the unique needs of the building and make the best decision for the job.
